Case History of Mrs. Vasanthy

Mrs.Vasanthy, wife of Mr. Babu, Chattupadathil, Pallipuram, Munambam, Kochi, Kerala, used to work as daily labourer at a fish peeling company and used to earn Rs.20-50/- per day. Mr. Babu is a fisherman and they have 3 daughters, who are married and settled. Their husbands also work as daily labourers, 2 are masons and one a painter. At present Babu & Vasanthy are living in the above address in 2.85 cents of land.

For aches and pains of body and weight loss, Vasanthy approached a lab for routine investigations and was detected to have jaundice and diabetes. So on medical advice had an Ultra Sound Scan on 27 th May 2009 at Paravoor Santhi Hospital, which showed gall bladder swelling. The doctor advised CT abdomen costing Rs. 7000 which she could not afford. Hence she reported to Lourdhe hospital, Kochi, where a Gastroduodenoscopy was done and was advised surgery costing Rs. one lakh. As she could not afford that amount, she reported to General Hospital, Ernakulam for CT abdomen and then she was referred to Trichur Medical College for the surgery. Finally, she underwent Whipple’s resection on 13 th July 2009 at Trichur for Periamullary Carcinoma. She had Cholecystectomy and Pancreatic Gastrostomy.

She is on medicines for control of diabetes and also undergoing Chemotherapy. She had 8 courses of chemotherapy at GH Ernakulam as advised by Dr.Rosy KA. They had already spent approximately Rs 40,000/- for the medicines and was seeking support for further treatment. Hence she was directed to SMF for continued chemotherapy support by Dr. Rosy. K. A, Oncologist, General Hospital, Ernakulam. SMF has decided to support Vasanthy from November 2009 onwards.
